Farm-level evaluation of grapes transpiration and evapotranspiration

Objectives

  1.   Piloting a satellite imagery-based software code for grape transpiration and evapotranspiration that calibrated and validated using a sap flow meter and soil moisture sensors.
  2.    Diagnosis of plot-level crop growth, development and homogeneity status, and irrigation efficiency for short and medium crop management adjustments.

Outcomes

  1.    Pilot software code to monitor with accuracy crop water use (less than 1 mm error of transpiration over a growing season).
  2.  Report on irrigation efficiency and crop management adjustment measures including mitigating actions for enhancing crop earliness, reduce blockage of translocation at maturation, and reduce losses in inputs (irrigation and fertilization).

Monitoring actual grape's evapotranspiration and transpiration using surface energy balance software calibrated using a sap flow meter and soil moisture sensors.
1. Top left plots show farm caption, farm-level actual ET at 30m resolution on a decadal basis.
2. The top right picture shows the installed sap flow meter.
3. The bottom left plot shows plot level actual ET variability.
4. The bottom center plot shows net transpiration (Ta_crop, mm/day) measured using the sap flow and compared to total ET from the surface energy balance (1st and 17th July).
5. The bottom right plot shows the comparison between observed transpiration using the sap flow meter and transpiration using 3 calibrations across the growing season from the end of dormancy in April and harvest in September.
